Detroit, Mich. – On Tuesday, Oct. 25, Tata Technologies, in partnership with Athletes for Charity and the Detroit Lions, celebrated “Manufacturing Month” at Mark Twain School for Scholars to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. Throughout the day, approximately 300 students from kindergarten to eighth grade were introduced to STEM in a “Literacy Zone,” each receiving a book to keep through a book distribution drive.

The event also featured various hands-on science and manufacturing activities in the “STEM Zone,” presented by Tata Technologies, Athletes for Charity, Wayne State University’s School of Medicine, College of Engineering and Chemistry Department. Professionals from Dassault SystŠmes, and Ford Motor Company helped motivate the students and promote manufacturing careers. Dassault SystŠmes’ 3DEXCITE’s “Your Product Here” and “Reality Generator” augmented reality apps (available for download) were a huge hit with the kids. Brandon Copeland, defensive end for the Detroit Lions, served as the school’s Principal for the day.

“Science, technology, engineering and mathematics are critical in driving innovation, yet there is a shortage of skilled workers in STEM-related fields because students are not pursuing degrees and careers within the sector,” said Kyle Heythaler, head of Tata Technologies’ North American corporate sustainability program. “At Tata Technologies, we are deeply invested in our community and our youth, and take advantage of opportunities to promote literacy and STEM education in a way that’s fun and engaging for both the kids and volunteers.”

In 2012, Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey proclaimed the first official National Manufacturing Day. President Barack Obama signed the Presidential Proclamation in 2014. National Manufacturing Day is observed annually on the first Friday in October to celebrate the industry and to inspire young people to pursue careers in manufacturing and engineering. Since its inception, American companies and educational institutions have recognized not only the day, but the entire month of October to showcase modern manufacturing and foster interest in STEM-related careers. This year, nearly 3,000 facilities in North America hosted events throughout the month. To learn more, visit www.mfgday.com.
