FLINT, Mich. – Tata Technologies, the Novi-based global engineering services provider, today announced a $30,000 donation to the United Way of Genesee County to provide nutritious food to Flint residents during a day-long event on Tuesday, Aug. 9.

Flint continues grappling with the effects of more than a year of elevated lead levels in the city’s water system. While the water was declared safe for consumption and bathing if properly filtered in June, concerns persist about lead poisoning, which can cause severe health problems. Children are particularly vulnerable and can face mental and physical development complications. Adults can experience cognitive impairment, heart problems, hearing loss, and weakened kidney function.

“Like everyone else, we’re heartbroken by the Flint water crisis,” said Kevin Noe, Chief Operating Officer at Tata Technologies. “Lead poisoning has no cure, but a healthy, targeted diet can help mitigate the symptoms, which is why we’ve focused our efforts here. As the city begins the road to recovery, it’s critical that the nutritional needs of residents are not forgotten.”

The food drive will provide an estimated 800 Flint families with a mixture of fresh and frozen foods rich in iron, vitamin C, and calcium – nutrients that can help the body combat lead poisoning by reducing absorption. The menu includes tuna, baked beans, potatoes, cereal, fresh apples, peppers and tomatoes. Literature on healthy eating and limiting lead exposure will also be available.

Tata Technologies employees are volunteering with their family and friends to distribute the food.

The drive is open to all Flint residents, who can pick up food at either of the two locations listed below:

Greater Holy Temple, 6702 N. Dort Hwy, Flint, MI 48505

10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Second Chance Church, 5306 North St., Flint, MI 48505

9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
