Preamble

The profound impact of globalization on business has forced automotive, aerospace and white-good industries to innovate and implement newer strategies to retain market leadership and growth with desired profitability. Use of IT has played a major role in the past to achieve the above set of goals. However, it has resulted in fragmented-islands-of-automation with a number of ropeway bridges spanning those islands, which are weak and unreliable. There are many IT processes affecting organizational performance but we would focus on engineering processes in this document.



Automakers, with a vision to make competitive world-class vehicles, have been making prudent business decisions by investing in technologies that help achieve dramatic cycle time reduction in the automotive design programs and new product variants/modifications introduction processes. A few years back, the area of information technology with CAD/CAM/CAE as the primary design tool was considered to be the prime mover in this direction. Today global competition is forcing companies to rethink on lines of higher business objectives, which CAD/CAM/CAE alone can't deliver.

It has been predicted that leading automakers would adopt cutting edge technologies like Knowledge Based Engineering coupled with CAD/CAM/CAE and other IT tools, to carry out
their vehicle development programs in the next 10 years. Their management is realizing that KBE will provide a focus in the design, planning, analysis and manufacturing set-ups.

KBE Solutions

Tata Technologies offers two technological lines of solutions: One based on VENUS and the other based on the Next Generation KBE kernel.The group has been delivering the ICAD and VENUS based applications to its global customers across the automobile and aerospace industry The Knowledge Based Engineering Solution provided by VENUS - Vehicle Engineers Universal Design System, based on ICAD technology, enables encapsulation of best practices, automates repetitive tasks, while adhering to the legislative and manufacturing constraints thereby building a "Virtual product and process model" in a short time.

Next Generation KBE Solution

At the start of the year 2000 the group set on a mission to design and develop a state-of-art next generation KBE application development framework. Over the couple of years the product has evolved with multiple functionalities and has been propogating the functional modelling approach to application design. The technology and the product has been demonstrated through some pilot projects with major industries in automobile and aerospace industry where it was well recieved and appreciated.

Tata Technologies is on the verge of worldwide release of its KBE solution enabling, among other aspects of KBE, Functional Modeling (FM) and Process Modeling (PM).FM is a relatively newer paradigm of application design, wherein the focus is on the functional requirements.
This solution will allow simulation, verification, analysis and implementation of any business or engineering process available on WindowsNT/2000, Linux RedHat 7.1 and IRIX operating systems.Future plan of development entails ports to other Unix variants.
